Priority taxa selection
Within the scope of "In-situ Conservation of Crop Wild Relatives through Enhanced Information and Field Application" project, has been developed a specific criteria for CWR priority taxa selection. During long discussions on choosing priority taxa, there have been some contradictions between botanists from different fields. Each group was evaluated with developed specific criteria, which were inapplicable for the other groups. The main problem was the existence of biological and ecological differences among CWR families. It has to be noted, that each of these families' socio-economic characteristics are also evaluated and considered as very important for agronomy and economy.
As a result, it was decided to divide all CWR species into four main groups - cereals, pulses, vegetables and fruits, and to develop separate list of criteria for each group, taking into consideration ecological, biological, economical and agronomical characteristics/values of a particular group. This separation is mechanical, but it gives possibility to collect species that have close characteristics into one large group and to develop new strategy for priority taxa selection.
The remarkable specialists from the relevant fields conducted a research for each CWR group in the Republic of Armenia. The general criteria remain the same for all species (Conservation status, Gene Sources and etc.). At the same time, a separate list of criteria for each group was developed, such as food/animal food, bee plants, environmental use, materials, and food additives.
All species included in the project's list are evaluated according to these criteria. Consequently, four species, that have a higher cumulative point, are chosen from each group (the list is presented below). The species, which have received the highest points, are considered as a priority: Triticums, Vavilovia formosa (Stev.) Fed., Beta. lomatogona and Pyrus caucasica Fed.
Based on the results of the discussions with experts, it was decided to choose also Aegilops tauschii Coss as priority taxon. These species cannot be separated from Triticums and registered as a host of very important genes absent in Triticums for baking industry.
